Speed Reading Certification

Is there a speed reading certification?

Good question. I wasn’t aware of any until I did some research. There are some institutions offering a certification. Here’s one example:

Speed Reading CertificationThis certification is offered by the online firm, ExpertRating.com. This training provider is an ISO 9001:2008 certified company, and it is a member of the TRUSTe and HackerSafe approved.

They claim:

You can be sure that you are buying a premium International certification that is recognized by hundreds of employers and Government bodies in the US and other countries.

The online course is led by instructor, runs for 6 weeks and ends in an examination. If your successful you get the certificate in the post. Here’s a link to their speed reading certification.

My thoughts:

To my knowledge there is no such thing as a certification for a skill like speed reading. There is no single entity controlling the knowledge of using these techniques, and what’s more, speed reading is not a profession. I can understand the need for having certified teachers, doctors, judges and maybe even lawyers, but speed readers? No, I don’t think so.

However, having this certificate might help you when your seeking employment – if nothing else it shows that you undertook a course and passed it – any potential employer has got to see value in that.
