The first option is to attend a speed reading class or seminar. There are a number of these which travel around the world, and during the one- or two-day class you will take an assessment, learn the basic speed reading skills with a charismatic instructor, and then get a lot of practice time to work on your skills. The advantage of this approach is that you will be highly motivated to learn and practice for the time that you’re there, but unfortunately, this is by far the most expensive option, and far too many people think that having gone to the seminar and practiced for two days that they have maximized their potential.
Your second option is to take an online speed reading course. This kind of program is significantly cheaper (around $50 instead of $2,000), and they won’t take up an entire weekend. Most of the time, these kinds of classes are pre-recorded and allow you to download all of the lessons and videos and work at your own pace. This is very advantageous for most people, as you can keep watching and re-watching specific lessons over and over again in case you don’t get it the first time. That is a big advantage, but the primary disadvantage of this method is that by it’s nature, absolutely no practice is built-in, and it can be hard to motivate yourself to practice if not guided exactly to the right kind of stuff to practice.
The third option, and my personal recommendation is to get a speed reading program. Most of the ones that I reviewed on this site have some element of teaching skills involved, but you won’t get as much as you would with one of the courses above. The primary advantage of software is that it’s meant to give you practice opportunities, and any software that is worth the money you’re paying will give you plenty of different kinds of practice options, and a lot of tracking options so you can see how well you’re doing.
